THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 2, 2026
WE LOST ONE OF OUR OWN
On Sunday, February 1st, we received a call from our dear friend, Jackie, that we never expected: her husband, Danny, died that morning.
Jackie and Danny have been High Rollers since the very beginning. They were among the first people to become regulars at the taproom when we opened.
Let us share a happy memory of how we became friends with their family.
In 2020, when some of the COVID-19 restrictions were lifted and people could finally sit at tables and enjoy a beer, we waited on a small family we had never met before. They were kind, easy to talk to, and we enjoyed the casual conversation. After they left, we realized their daughter had forgotten her headband. We had no idea who they were or how to contact them, so we tucked the headband under the counter and hoped they’d come back for it.
Several months later, that same family walked into the taproom. Shannon immediately recognized them and blurted out, “We have your daughter’s headband!” They couldn’t believe we had held onto it all that time, just in case they returned. That moment was the start of a real friendship.
We double-dated. We shared meals at each other’s homes. We laughed—a lot. Danny loved our Americanization Pale Ale and gave Brooks a hard time whenever the taproom ran out (don’t be fooled—we always had a “secret stash” waiting for him when we got together outside the taproom). Jackie and Shannon started meeting up for Sunday brunch.
In 2023, when our house was destroyed in an electrical fire, Jackie and Danny were the ones who insisted we stay at their home while we figured out our next steps. They were about to leave on vacation and had offered us their home for an entire week. “Our home is your home,” they said—and they meant it. Their generosity during one of the hardest moments of our lives sealed it: We would fight lions, tigers, and bears to protect this family. They are our people.
TAKE CARE OF THOSE WHO TAKE CARE OF YOU. Those are words we live by. Take care of those who take care of you.
In early 2023, Jackie shared devastating news: she had ovarian cancer. She has been fighting ever since. While she did make progress and experienced a brief remission, the cancer returned just months later—more aggressive and more widespread. In late 2025, Jackie learned that all conventional cancer treatments had been exhausted. She qualified for clinical trials, but participating would have required moving to Boston and leaving her husband and daughter for several months. Instead, she chose to pursue a different treatment called an Antibody-Drug Conjugate (ADC), a targeted therapy designed to deliver chemotherapy directly to tumors. The hope is disease control and a better quality of life than traditional chemo.
Jackie recently started FMLA from her teaching job and was on Danny’s health insurance.
Our hearts are broken for Jackie and for their 11-year-old daughter, Kaylee. Our hearts hurt for Danny’s family and for Jackie’s family. It hurts to see someone we love in so much pain.
We don’t know what Jackie’s next steps will be. Right now, there are far more questions than answers.
Jackie’s family has reinstated a GoFundMe account to help cover cancer-related costs, bills, food, household expenses… To help cover life. There is absolutely no pressure to give—but if you are able, please donate to support Jackie and Kaylee. And if you can, share the link with your friends and family. (The GoFundMe also has a cancer journey update on January 26th under the “Updates” section. You can learn more about what Jackie is going through.)
Danny was a Navy veteran who married Jackie in 2013. He loved hockey (a loyal Pens fan, but we overlooked that), but more than anything, he loved being a good husband and a devoted father.
His sudden passing left an incredible hole in so many hearts. He will be deeply missed.
